In 1879, Dr. Henry Faulds published a paper in Nature reporting that he had found fingerprints on a document that had been written by a man who was wanted for murder. This was essentially proof of concept that fingerprints could be used as evidence and eventually led to widespread use in law enforcement. Soon, police started collecting fingerprints from suspects at crime scenes.
