Forensic scientists first used fingerprints in 1902, when two Italian police officers developed a system to classify them. The pair were investigating a murder case where they didn’t have any evidence at all, so they had nothing to compare their findings with. This type of fingerprint classification system is called bundle fingerprinting and it uses three key creases in each print to classify each one uniquely. The Italian detectives came up with 14 variations based on bundle fingerprints, which still forms the basis of current classification systems today.
